Cattleya mendelii - Plant photo by Richard LindbergThe genus Cattleya (C) contains quite a few species from tropical South America. They do best in a medium that has good drainage and dry between watering. Give them a short dryer rest after blooming.

Cattleya mendelii grows in the Colombian Andes on exposed rocks. It is fragrant, cool to warm growing and needs bright light.

This plant is potted in sphagnum over peanuts in a 4 1/2-inch clay pot there are three pseudobulbs and it stands eight inches above the pot.
